Top 17 Reciprocating Pump Interview Question for- Fresher Mechanical Engineer:

Question Number 1: What is a reciprocating pump? What are components of reciprocating pump?
Answer: Reciprocating pump is a positive displacement pump where a certain volume of liquid is collected in an enclosed volume and is discharged using pressure to the required application.
Reciprocating pumps are more suitable for low volumes of flow at high pressures.
Components of Reciprocating Pump
The main components of the reciprocating pump are as follows:
1.    Suction Pipe
2.    Suction Valve
3.    Delivery Pipe
4.    Delivery Valve
5.    Cylinder
6.    Piston and Piston Rod
7.    Crank and Connecting Rod
Question Number 2: Name different types of reciprocating pumps?
Answer: Following are the different types of reciprocating pumps
Ø  Steam pumps,
Ø  Power pumps,
Ø  Metering pumps,
Ø  axial piston pumps
Ø  Sucker rod pumps.
Question Number 3: Name different types of rotary pumps?
Answer: Following are the different types of rotary pumps
Ø  External gear pumps,
Ø  Internal gear pumps,
Ø  Sanitary type pumps,
Ø  External screw pumps,
Ø  screw pumps,
Ø  Sliding vane pumps
Question Number 4: Explain what is positive and non-positive displacement?
Answer:
Positive displacement pump are those which discharge specific amount & quantity is constant. Positive displacement pumps are that which prevents undesirable flow and pumps the fluid within the closed space.
Ex: Reciprocating pumps Rotary pumps. Its efficiency is more when compared to non-positive displacement pumps.
non positive pumps are those which discharge random amount & quantity varies. Non-positive displacement pumps have no provisional to prevent the reversal of flow. We can say that there may be some loses in this kind of pumps but the main advantage is it can be used when high pressure and large quantity of fluid is to be pumped.
Question Number 5: What is Auto Dosing?
Answer: Auto dosing is an automated system of feeding the equipment with liquid products. It is the ideal way to ensure the correct calibrated dose at the right time every time in auto.
Question Number 6: Where Multi-stage pump used?
Pressure washing of Aircraft, Trains, Boats and Road vehicles as well as Spray washing of industrial parts and Electronic components.
Question Number 7: Difference between single acting and double acting pump?
Answer:
- In single-acting machines the compression takes place on only one side of the piston; double-acting machines use both sides of the cylinder for compression. The flow is continuous in double acting and in single acting the flow is not continuous unless there is a surge vessel.
Question Number 8: What is the function of reciprocating pump?
Answer: It is used to deliver large pressure for pumping the water. The chamber in the reciprocating pumps where the liquid is trapped is a stationary cylinder. This cylindrical chamber also contains the plunger or piston. Reciprocating pumps are highly effective and they are used where a high degree of accuracy is required.
Question Number 9: what is BOOSTER pump which is used in power plant?
Answer: Booster pump is used where high pressure is required. Normally onboard ships oil is feeded to IC engines via a feed pump and a booster pump in conjunction. Feed pump draws oil from the oil tank and its discharge is connected to the suction of booster pump to increase the pressure.
This is used when oil is supposed to be injected at a high pressure into the engine. In general a screw pump is used as a booster pump.
Question Number 10: Explain briefly the metering pumps?
Answer: Generally these types of reciprocating pumps are relatively small and light in weight. Small reciprocating pumps are fixed on a light structural frame and other pumps have metal base bolted with the floor.
